The Trongate is situated towards the east end of Argyle street (the dodgy eastern end of Argyle Street as opposed to the dodgy western end of Argyle Street). If you ever decide to take a walk up to the Trongate you will feel the atmosphere change from a normal bustling high street shopper atmosphere (admittedly a bit more of the neddy sports shop type of shopper as opposed to the buchanan street shopper) to bustling Trongate shop lifters and old women with musty smells. The Trongate always seems to be damp, even on dry days.
One thing you will notice on your trip to the trongate is the overwhelming number of Leather shops. No Joke. On my last visit I counted at least eight and I'm not sure that I got all of them. This would perhaps seem less strange if there were any leather shops anywhere else in Glasgow but there aren't! Why do people in the Trongate need so many leather shops? Was this some sort of ploy by the council to turn the Trongate into the leather centre of Europe? It's baffling. Someone must know why this is the case. I would be interested to know exactly how many leather shops there are in this area of Glasgow so if anyone wants to take a trip up there to count them and get back to me that would be appreciated! One shop also located in the Trongate is "Wean's World". This is a Glasgow institution and must be so baffling to any tourists who accidently ends up here.
The Trongate also boasts the dodgiest McDonalds in the world. If you ever venture into this McDonalds (perhaps escaping the beggar chasing you down the street) you are three times as likely to witness some sort of fast food related violence as you would in the second dodgiest McDonalds in the world, located at the other end of Argyle street. In fact I'm sure that one time there were more people standing outside asking for money than there were inside the place eating.
